Canva is a popular design tool for flyers, business cards, posters and social media — but exporting a print-ready PDF from Canva requires specific settings that many users overlook. This guide covers everything you need to get a file your print shop will accept.

The Two PDF Types in Canva

Canva offers two PDF download options:

Always choose PDF Print when sending to a print shop.

Step-by-Step: Export PDF Print from Canva

  1. Finish your design in Canva at the correct final print size (e.g. A5 flyer at 148 × 210 mm).
  2. Click Share (top right) → Download.
  3. Under "File type", select PDF Print.
  4. Check the box "Crop marks and bleed". This adds 3 mm bleed automatically.
  5. Click Download.

Tip: Keep all important content (text, logos) at least 5 mm inside the page edge in Canva — this becomes the safe zone after cutting.

Canva and CMYK: What You Need to Know

This is Canva’s biggest limitation for professional print: Canva works in RGB internally. Even the PDF Print export uses RGB colour values by default. Many digital print providers (who use digital presses) handle this conversion themselves and accept RGB files. However, offset print shops and higher-end printers typically require CMYK.

If your print shop requires CMYK, you have two options:

Image Resolution in Canva

Canva’s PDF Print export renders at 300 DPI — which is correct for standard print. However, if you have placed low-resolution images in your Canva design (e.g. images downloaded from the web), those images will still be low resolution in the export.

Always use Canva’s own image library or upload high-resolution images (at least 300 DPI at the intended print size).

Fonts in Canva PDFs

Canva embeds fonts in the PDF Print export by default. This is one area where Canva performs well — you generally do not need to worry about font embedding when exporting from Canva.

Limitations of Canva for Professional Print

For basic digital print (flyers, business cards from online printers), Canva’s PDF Print export is usually sufficient. For high-end offset print or demanding colour accuracy requirements, a professional design tool (InDesign, Illustrator) gives you more control.

After Exporting: Always Run a Preflight Check

Once you have downloaded your PDF from Canva, upload it to PrintReady247 to verify it meets the technical requirements of your print shop. If the file needs CMYK conversion or any other adjustments, PrintConvert247 handles this automatically.
